A visitor centre that grows from the earth

02 March 2010

The Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre in South Africa is an amazing structure, looking as if it has grown from the earth like a vast termite mound. Designed by Peter Rich Architects of Johannesburg, the building won 'Building of the Year 2009' in the World Architecture Festival.

The centre was built to serve the Mapungubwe National Park, based around the site of an ancient civilization linked to the Great Zimbabwe trading culture. There are no details of what the actual interpretation will be like - here's hoping it will live up to its inspiring home. We might also hope for such imaginative and fitting designs for centres in the UK.
