New Technologies: New Frontiers and Adventures in Countryside Interpretation

Losehill Hall, Peak District National Park, Derbyshire

10 May 2010 to 11 May 2010

AHI are delighted to be able to work in partnership with the Peak District Interpretation Partnership to share and discuss the findings of the Peak Experience new media project at this important two day event in the Peak District National Park.

The seminar will review the lessons learned from the project’s exploration of new technologies in the natural environment. It will be based on practical work and delegates will be able to see a range of techniques in use.

Bookings are now closed for this event. If you’re coming, and want a sneak preview of what we’ll be doing (or just to be very thoroughly prepared), here are some links to material we’ll be looking at during the seminar.

Audio tour

This audio tour for the Castleton Museum is  in a zip archive of 17.5 megabytes. You'll need to download the archive and extract the contents before transferring them to your phone or media player.

Animated GIFs

Here’s a sample of this compact format. This one presents a potted guide to Losehill Hall.

Once the gif is downloaded copy it over to the image gallery on your mobile phone, either via a USB cable connection or by sending it over Bluetooth from a laptop with Bluetooth.

Podscrolls

These guides will play on most media players (mp3 players, smart phones etc). Here’s a sample podscroll for the Wye Downs. It's a 4.8 Megabyte zip archive: you’ll need to download it, then extract the files and transfer them to your media player.

The instructions below are for setting up the podscroll on an iPod: if you haven’t subscribed to Apple mania you’ll need to check your device’s instructions for how to get the files into the ‘My Pictures’ directory (or a directory with a similar name).

Instructions for iPods

PC
  • Open your ‘My Pictures’ folder (which you can find via the ‘Start’ menu)
  • Drag the Podscroll folder into ‘My Pictures’
  • Open iTunes (with your iPod connected of course) and select the iPod button
  • through ‘Preferences’ (Edit menu). Click the Photos tab and ensure that your iPod is
  • set to synchronize with the ‘My Pictures’ folder.
  • You can find the ‘Wye Downs Podscroll’ in the Photos menu on your iPod!

Mac
  • Open ‘iPhoto’ (which you can find via the ‘Applications’ folder)
  • Drag the Podscroll folder into the iPhoto Source List to create a new Album
  • Open iTunes (with your iPod connected of course) and select the iPod button
  • through ‘Preferences’ (Edit menu). Click the Photos tab and ensure that your iPod is
  • set to synchronize with the iPhoto Albums.
  • You can find the ‘Wye Downs Podscroll’ in the Photos menu on your iPod!

Using Podscrolls
The guide appears in the Photos menu on your iPod. Select it and double-click the centre button. Once you see the blue title page, you can navigate with the scroll wheel, or with the rewind and fast forward buttons. To help you navigate, keep an eye on the page numbers, chapters and border colours. Avoid the play/pause button since this will start the slideshow (although you can stop it with the Menu-button). Enjoy!!

Full details and a programme are in the event flier.
