Carl Atkinson

The AHI Lifetime Achievement Award
AHI Membership panel member and innovator of interpretation in Wales.

The first lifetime achievement award is for someone who joined the Centre for Environmental Interpretation in Manchester in 1993, making him one of the first cognitive psychologists to enter the interpretation profession. He joined the Countryside Council for Wales in 2001.

He has served as a Trustee for the Association of Heritage Interpretation, chaired the Membership panel and was awarded Full Membership (MAHI) in 2004.

He was instrumental in setting up Dehongli Cymru/ Interpret Wales and has led numerous training courses at Plas Tan y Bwlch, Snowdonia.

Sam Ham says “he is a special brand of enlightened leaders in the interpretation profession, inspired by his love of virtually everything around him and armed with an empirical understanding of the interpretation process that has helped shape a generation of practice.”

In light of his retirement from Natural Resources Wales in 2017, it is a fitting we award an AHI Lifetime Achievement Award to Carl Atkinson.
